These drugs suppress appetite, requiring nutritionally dense foods, and protein is key. As a result, food companies are rushing to add protein to everything from breakfast cereals to potato chips. This rush has led to a shortage of food-grade whey protein, pushing prices to new records. The dairy industry is struggling to keep up with the demand, and the situation is further complicated by reduced U.S. exports to China, which is now seeking more whey protein from Europe. The price hike is significant, with 80% whey protein concentrate trading at over $13 per pound in the U.S., a 250% increase from last year. This is causing consumer prices to rise, with whey protein concentrate powder increasing by around 15% and premium whey isolate powder seeing steeper gains. The situation is not unique to the U.S. In Europe, 80% whey protein concentrate hit a record average of 26,450 euros per metric ton in May, more than double the previous year. This shortage and price hike have led to some manufacturers increasing prices for protein powder or protein-enriched products. Now Foods, for example, raised the price of its whey protein products due to higher raw ingredient costs. However, the dairy industry is not without solutions. Manufacturers are investing in whey protein production, and companies like Glanbia and Agropur are expanding their capacity. While this will eventually improve supplies, the relief won't be immediate. The future of the protein landscape is uncertain, with higher prices potentially causing some consumers to reduce their whey protein purchases.
